...And for the next three years it kept getting pushed off because something—oh, I don't know, "work-related"—kept popping up. Like our first big advertising campaign. Or our first television Commercial. So we'd tell the joke and move on. The joke got stale. Thankfully, we've been working on a custom CMS for about a year. It's what powers this site. It lets anyone at Embryo update the portfolio, blog about running an ad agency, share video, or post to Facebook. We learned a lot in the development process—knowledge that we can now share with our clients when developing their sites. Of course, new websites are like new laptops—the minute you get one, it's already out of date. Hopefully version three won't take as long....

...ow so? Let’s start with the mental struggle that includes consuming all negative news, all the time. Unemployment at 18% (that’s the real figure). Increased cost of living. The collapse of Commercial and residential housing markets. The continual decimation of the middle class. The obesity epidemic. The oil apocalypse. And the fact that an octopus managed to rig the World Cup. It’s no wonder that everyone is obsessed with LiLo, Tiger and Mad Mel – at least their bad news doesn’t have any bearing on the rest of us! I can’t imagine what mental stamina and fortitude it would take to launch a business fresh in 2010. I wouldn’t want to be in that position – but for millions right now, starting a business may seem like the best option. If you are one of one of those millions starting right now, here’s some quick advice: 1) Build your opportunity network as quickly and as vastly as possible. This means connect with everyone – friends, family, old co-workers, someone who owes you a favor, etc. Talk to them about what they do. Then, ask who they know and who they would be willing to introduce you to. Building your network starts at the grassroots level – and stays there pretty much for the life of most businesses. 2) Survival trumps strategy. Not all the time – but in these times, for sure. In this type of market, the goal is to survive to live another day. Don’t spend time on theorizing about your next steps. Work on getting a contract instead. Get it signed. Do a good job and deliver for you client. Exceed their expectations. Then, ask for more work. In this economy, quality work is in short supply – over-delivering matters.
